Abstract

An adhesive composition comprises 2 to 70% by weight of an epoxy group-containing compound of molecular weight from 80 to 1,000,000, 0.5 to 60% of a blocked isocyanate and 97.5 to 15% of a halogen-containing polymer containing 5 to 75% halogen. The polymer is e.g. rubber hydrochloride, polychloroprene, polyepichlorohydrin, chlorinated natural rubber, chlorinated butyl rubber, bromobutyl rubber, or a homo- or copolymer of vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride such as vinyl chloridevinylidene chloride, vinyl or vinylidene chlorideacrylonitrile, or vinyl or vinylidene chlorideactylate ester copolymers and vinyl chloridevinyl acetate-maleate or fumarate terpolymers. The epoxy group-containing compound may be a reaction product of a halogen-containing epoxide with (1) a polyhydric alcohol, (2) a polyhydric phenol including phenol-formaldehyde and resorcinol-formaldehyde resins, or a glycidyl ether, an epoxy-substituted cyclohexene carboxylate, an epoxidized butadiene, nitrile or butadiene-styrene rubber or a copolymer of a vinyl or diene monomer with a vinyl epoxide or vinyl glycidyl compound, examples being given. The blocked isocyanate is obtained by reacting an isocyanate, or an adduct of an isocyanate and a compound having at least 2 active H atoms, e.g. glycols, polyols and polyether or polyester polyols, with a phenol, a tertiary alcohol, aromatic 2 DEG amine, imide, active methylene compound, mercaptan, lactam, imine, urea or oxime. The halogen-containing polymers used in the examples are (1) and (2) neoprene latices, (3) a polyvinyl chloride or polyvinylidene chloride latex, (4) polyvinyl chloride, mixed with butadiene-styrene-vinyl pyridine copolymer latices, and (7) polyvinylidene chloride, mixed with butadiene - acetylonitrile - vinyl pyridine or methacrylic acid terpolymer latices. The epoxy group-containing compounds used are (1) a solution of "Epekote" (Registered Trade Mark) in methanol, (2) a latex of a butadiene-glycidyl methacrylate copolymer, (3) an "Eponite" (Registered Trade Mark) emulsion, (4) an emulsion of a resin produced from a cresol-formaldehyde resin and epichlorohydrin, and (5) vinyl chlorohexenedioxide. The blocked isocyanates used are blocked tolylene diisocyanate, or tolylene diisocyanate adducts, or polymethylenepolyphenyl isocyanate-cresol adducts, or polymethylenepolyphenyl isocyanate-dodecyl mercaptan adducts. The compositions are used for adhering polyester fibres to rubber stock (see Divisions D1 and B7).ALSO:Polyethylene terephthalate fibres are dipped in an adhesive comprising an aqueous emulsion or dispersion of solids containing 2 to 70% by weight of an epoxy compound of molecular weight from 80 to 1,000,000, 0.5 to 60% of a blocked isocyanate and 97.5 to 15% of a halogen-containing polymer having 5 to 75% of halogen atom. The treated fibres are dried, dipped in a resorcinol-formaldehyde/rubber latex composition and dried again prior to being bonded to rubber stock.
