A typewriter having an interchangeable truncated sphere typehead (not shown) mounted on a traversable carriage (not shown) and a perforating machine producing a record tape, which may subsequently be used to control the type selection of the typewriter is provided with an accent key 1, Fig. 1, which when depressed causes first a backspacing action to occur and then the printing of the accentuation mark associated with the key. Depression of key 1 causes key lever 3 to depress an interposer 11 which is latched by spring 19 so that a lug 29 may depress a back spacing coil and effect the back spacing by rocking of lever 37 on engagement with its lug 35 and consequent rocking of a bellcrank 41 which depresses a backspace interposer 45. Meanwhile the printing cycle is suppressed in that the accentuation interposer 11, which is provided with lugs 21 which co-operate with the type character selection bails 23, has its clutch bail 25 actuating lug 27 removed. Following completion of backspacing the backspace interposer 45 pivots the bellcrank 41 which rocks the clutch bail 25 through an intermediate lever 47 whereupon a cam shaft 30 is rotated though a half-revolution to displace the interposer 11 whose lugs 21 actuate the type selection bails 23 to complete the printing cycle by printing the accent mark. Key interlocks; case-shift key actions.-Depression of key lever 3, causes the keys of the whole keyboard to be locked until the interposer 11 is returned to its original position by the rotation of cam-shaft 30, the locking being effected by a lug 15, on the key lever 3, which displaces a series of interlocking rollers mounted slidably on a rod 17. Also accidental depression of the case-shift key lever 53, Fig. 2, is prevented by providing its extension arm 55 with a lug which has two spaced notches 57, 59, whereby one of the latter is engaged by a panel 51 on the backspacing bail 31 depending on the position of the caseshift key lever 53.
