Abstract
1,097,791. Lasers. MINISTER OF AVIATION, LONDON. Jan. 4, 1966 [Jan. 6, 1965], No. 541/65. Heading H1C. The resonant light path through the active element 1 of a Q-switched laser enters and leaves the element at the Brewster angle, while within the element the path includes a plurality of total internal reflections C, D, E, F at two plane parallel optically flat sides OP, RS of the element. As shown in Fig. 1 the optical cavity is formed by an adjustable mirror 2 and a clockwise-rotating mirror 3. The active element is a neodymium glass rod having sloped and parallel plane end faces OS, PR, the end face PR being so arranged with respect to the rotating mirror 3 that reflected incident light in paths such as HJ pass through the active element and emerge at KL without total internal reflection. Thus Q-switching becomes more effective, since the resonant light path is established suddenly when the light normally emergent at points such as K becomes totally internally reflected at F as mirror 3 rotates. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the resonant light path enters and leaves the laser active element through angled extensions PQ, TS of the plane parallel and optically flat sides OP, RS.
