Abstract

Products suitable for use as lubricating oil additives are obtained by reacting at least one alkylene oxide containing up to 4 carbon atoms with an olefin polymer formed from one or more olefins having 2-12 carbon atoms, and containing a reactive hydrogen atom (as defined). The preferred products correspond to the formula RCH2O(AO)xH, where x is from 1 to 100, R is a C30- 200 alkyl group and A is a C2- 4 alkylene group; these are the alkoxylation products of the polymer reactant RCHO or RCH2OH obtained by ozonolysis of an olefin polymer with subsequent reduction, the reactant RCHO, if used, being converted to RCH2OH before reaction with the alkylene oxide. The products may be added to a lubricant base in amounts of 0.5 to 20% by weight of the base; they serve as stabilizers, antioxidants, pour-point depressants, corrosion inhibitors, dispersing agents and viscosity modifiers.ALSO:Oxygenated derivatives of olefin polymers are prepared by reacting at least one alkylene oxide containing up to 4 carbon atoms with an olefin polymer formed from one or more olefins having 2-12 carbon atoms, and containing a reactive hydrogen atom, i.e. one which will react with an alkylene oxide in the presence of sodium hydroxide or an equivalent base. In a preferred embodiment, the polymer reactant is of the formula RCHO or RCH2OH where R is a C30- 200 alkyl radical, and 1 to 100 moles of alkylene oxide are reacted per mole of polymer reactant; when RCHO is used the reaction conditions are such that it is converted to RCH2OH in situ. The reactants of the given formulae can be obtained by subjecting an olefin polymer (derived from a C2- 12 olefin) to ozonolysis with subsequent reduction. Suitable olefins from which the polymer reactant may be derived include ethylene, propylene, isobutene, 1-butene, 2-butene, 1-pentene, 2-pentene, 1-hexene, 1-octene, 2-octene, 1-decene, 1-dodecene and 2-dodecene. The reaction with the alkylene oxide, which preferably comprises ethylene oxide, is suitably effected in the presence of a strong base such as sodium or potassium hydroxide, metallic sodium or potassium sodium or potassium alkoxide wherein the alkyl moiety has 1-4 carbon atoms, or sodium or potassium hydride. A solvent may optionally be present, e.g. aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbons. Examples illustrate the reaction of the ozonolysis product of polybutene with ethylene and propylene oxide, and of the ozonolysis products of polydodecene-1, ethylene-propylene copolymer and hexene-1-octene-1 copolymer with ethylene oxide. The products are useful as lubricating oil additives.
