Abstract
1,097,693. Facsimile telegraphy. MUIRHEAD & CO. Ltd. Nov. 26, 1965 [Dec. 10, 1964], No. 50393/64. Heading H4F. A feeding arrangement for a facsimile telegraph drum comprises means for releasing and discharging paper already on the drum and for drawing off paper from a supply roll, guillotining it to a desired length and wrapping and securing such length around the drum. The paper is secured by means of clips 5, 6, Figs. 1 to 5 (also Figs. 13 to 20, not shown) running the full length of the drum and normally retained in a paper gripping position by means of springs (17, 17<SP>1</SP>), the paper being released on lifting the clips by means of arms (16, 16<SP>1</SP>) operated by further arms (18, 18<SP>1</SP>) from a cam system (Figs. 7 and 8) which is driven by a low-speed motor clutched in automatically at the end of a normal scanning sequence when the drum has been brought to rest. The low-speed motor then rotates the drum to a reference position (Fig. 13) and brings rollers (A and B, Figs. 8 and 13 to 20) to bear on the paper surface. The discharge operation then comprises the steps of lifting clip (5, Fig. 14) to allow the leading edge of the paper to be raised by means of fingers (12) and on continued rotation, to be received by tines (64) which guide it to developing and fixing baths (66, 67). Fresh paper (65) is then introduced in rollers (28, 28a, Fig. 16), clip 5 being lowered to clamp it (Fig. 17) and clip 6 lifted to free the trailing edge of the discharging paper (Fig. 18). On further rotation a guillotine (53, 53a, Fig. 20) is operated and the trailing edge of the new sheet is then clamped by the lowering of clip 6. In addition to controlling the operation of clip 5 and 6, the cam system (Figs. 7 and 8) also controls the operation of the paper feed rollers (28, 28a), the guillotine and the raising of rollers A and B when necessary to grip the edge of the new paper and to clear the clips 5 and 6. During the initial stage in the supply of new paper via the feed rollers (28, 28a) and during the operation of the guillotine the rotation of the drum is arrested due to small gaps in the teeth of gear-wheel (61, Fig. 12) and is held steady in each arrested position by a member (63, Figs. 7 and 12) rotating with the drum and provided with projections (63a) arranged to engage projections (61a, 61b) on gear-wheel (61).
