Abstract
Particles of a thermoplastic resin comprise a core of a homopolymer of a first monomer of the formula <FORM:1097562/C3/1> in which X1, X2, X3 and X4 are the same or different and each is a hydrogen or halogen atom, at least one of X1, X2, X3 and X4 being other than hydrogen, encapsulated with from 0.1 to 10% by weight, based on the total weight of polymer, of a copolymer of said first monomer and a second monomer of formula <FORM:1097562/C3/2> in which X1, X2, X3 and X4 are as defined above, different from the said first monomer, the copolymer having a softening point lower than that of the homopolymer. The particles may be formed by polymerizing the first monomer to a partial conversion of at least 70% and then adding the second monomer, in an amount less than the amount of second monomer remaining, and continuing polymerization. Alternatively, the first monomer is completely polymerized before adding a further amount of said monomer and a minor proportion of the second monomer. In the example, the first procedure is employed, the first monomer being vinyl chloride and the second vinylidene chloride. The process is carried out in an aqueous suspension containing lauroyl peroxide and hydroxypropyl cellulose. The resulting resin is fused with dioctyl phthalate and tin butyl mercaptide to form a sheet.
