Abstract
<PICT:1097505/C1/1> A bithermal process is provided for the enrichment of hydrogen in deuterium, wherein two phases, one liquid and the other gaseous selected from the systems H2O-H2S; NH3-H2\t and H2O-H2, are brought into countercurrent contact consecutively in a number of stages; each stage comprising a hot zone, a cold zone and an extraction zone. In the preferred embodiment shown in Fig. 2, the stages comprise hot zones 31, 32 . . . 3n, cold zones 21, 22 . . . 2n and extraction zones 11, 12 . . . 1n which are preferably cold. The liquid circulates from the extraction tower to the cold tower, from the cold tower to the hot tower and from the hot tower to the extraction tower in a closed loop as shown by solid lines 41, 42 . . . 4n. The gaseous phase circulates in the loops 51, 52 . . . 5n (shown dotted) and is passed from stage to stage by paths 62, 63 . . . 6n and 72 . . . 7n. The gaseous phase is introduced at 61 and gas enriched in deuterium is extracted at 8.
