Abstract

Microporous sheet material, suitable for shaping into articles and having a pore volume of at least 25%, is made of a solid composition comprising 6 2/3 -100% by volume of polyolefine having a standard load melt index of 0, 0-40% by volume of a substantially inert plasticizer and 0-93 1/3 % by volume of a filler. The sheet is made by first compounding a composition consisting of 5-65 volume per cent of the polyolefine, 5-60 volume per cent of filler and 90-30 volume per cent of plasticizer and then leaching out at least a portion of the filler or plasticizer or both by a suitable solvent or solvents. The polyolefine may be a mixture of a very high molecular weight polyolefine together with one of a lower molecular weight. The filler may be water-insoluble or water-soluble, lists of materials falling into both categories being given in the Specification. In the examples, the microporous sheet is made by forming a compound of 15% by volume of polyethylene, 15% by volume of silica filler, 67% by volume of petroleum oil and 1% by volume of carbon black, and then shaping it into a sheet. The sheet thus formed was then immersed in hexane at room temperature for one hour to extract the petroleum oil, thus forming a microporous sheet having a pore volume of about 65%.
