Abstract

A complex shaped sintered article e.g. made from powdered metal or nylon, is produced by charging the powder into a mould, heating the mould and powder to presinter the powder into a fragile preform which is then transferred to a die of the required shape where it is compressed to pulverise the preform and further compressed to form a briquette which is ejected and then sintered. In the example the sintered article is a planet gear carrier or rotor for use in planetary transmission and the preform is made in a <PICT:1097355/C6-C7/1> <PICT:1097355/C6-C7/2> graphite mould 14 which incorporates a main core 58, outlying pin cores 60 spaced circumferentially, transverse radial removable core bars 62 having holes 64 for pin cores 60. The charged mould is heated to 1300 DEG -1600 DEG F. The presintered preform is transferred to die 16, see Fig.4, which incorporates a main core rod 166 with a splined lower reduced diameter part 168 telescoping with a lower inner tubular punch 154. The upper part 170 of core rod 166 telescopes with an upper tubular punch 172 in die bore 146 and the punch has three circumferentially spaced bores 178 which receive core pins 182. Retractable rectangular core bars 196 are aligned with bores 190 and 192 and recess 194 in the head 170 of core rod 166. The die also include telescoping tubular outer and intermediate punches 150 and 152. The preform is compacted in the die and then sintered at 1850 DEG -2400 DEG F. In a further embodiment a composite preform is made up of several component preforms stacked in the die cavity and compacted together.
