Lubricating compositions comprise a lubricating oil and one or more oil-soluble terpolymers having a basic nitrogen content of 0.1 to 2 weight per cent and an intrinsic viscosity of 0.2 to 1.5 dl/g, and comprising units of two C2- 6 1-olefins and a C5- 30, substituted 1-olefin having a basic nitrogen atom at least b to an olefinic carbon atom and single bonded only to carbon, hydrogen or silicon. The oil may be a mineral oil, and the compositions may contain conventional additives, particularly zinc dihydrocarbyl phosphorodithioates having 4 to 36 carbon atoms in the hydrocarbyl groups. Examples describe compositions comprising mineral lubricating oils and products obtained by copolymerizing ethylene and propylene with (I) N(8 - [1 - octenyl]) triethylene tetramine, (II-V) 8-dimethylamino octene-1 and (VI) N-allyl hexamethyl disilazane; and by reacting ethylene/propylene/8 - bromooctene - 1 copolymers with (VII) 2-aminoethyl piperazine, (VIII) dimethylamine, (IX) di-n-propylamine, (X) di - (2 - hydroxyethyl) amine, (XI-XIII and XV) triethylene tetramine and (XVIII) morpholine.ALSO:Oil soluble terpolymers having a basic nitrogen content of 0.1 to 2 weight per cent and an intrinsic viscosity of 0.2 to 1.5 dl/g. and comprising units of two C2- 6 1-olefins and a C5- 30 1-olefin having a basic nitrogen atom bonded to a saturated carbon atom at least b to an olefinic carbon atom and single bonded only to carbon, hydrogen or silicon, may be prepared by copolymerizing the monomers in the presence of a "Ziegler" catalyst, or by copolymerizing the C2- 6 olefins with an o -halo-1-olefin in the presence of such a catalyst and reacting the product with an amine. Polymerization may be effected in inert hydrocarbon solvents in the presence of a catalyst comprising an alkyl aluminium halide, which may be activated with titanium trichloride, and vanadium oxychloride, there being 2 to 20 atoms of aluminium per atom of vanadium and not more than one mole of nitrogen-containing monomer per atom of aluminium. The products may be used as dispersants and detergents in lubricating oils. Many suitable reactants are specified and examples describe the copolymerization of ethylene and propylene with (I) N(8-[1-octenyl]) triethylene tetramine, (II-V) 8-dimethylamino octene-1 and (VI) N-allyl hexamethyl disilazane; and the copolymerization of ethylene, propylene and 8-bromoctene-1 and reaction of the product with (VII) 2-aminoethylpiperazine, (VIII) dimethylamine, (IX) di-n-propylamine, (X) di(2-hydroxyethyl)amine, (XI-XIII and XV) triethylene tetramine and (XVII) morpholine.
