Abstract

A rigid cellular polyurethane is prepared by reacting a polyfunctional active hydrogen-containing compound with an organic polyisocyanate in the presence of a blowing agent, an organic antimonate (III) compound soluble in the reacting mixture and a small amount of water sufficient to control the reaction rate. Preferable amount of water is 0.25-1.25% by weight of the active hydrogen containing compound. The organic antimonates are of the formula (RO)3- x; Sb Clx;, where y = Cl, x = 0,1 2, R is the residue of an alcohol which may contain substituents such as halogen, hydroxyl and ether oxygen atoms. Typical antimonates (III) are tris (2-chloroethyl) antimonate (III), tris (1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) antimonate (III) and antimony-containing polyether polyols, The active hydrogen-containing compound can be a polyfunctional polyester, polyesteramide or polyether. Suitable blowing agents are carbon dioxide produced in situ and low boiling halogenated (preferably fluorinated) aliphatic saturated hydrocarbons such as trichlorofluoromethane and mixtures of these.
