Abstract

1,096,216. Automatic frequency control systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. March 12, 1965 [March 13, 1964], No. 10574/65. Heading H3A. In an automatic frequency control system a frequency generator Gf produces harmonically related signal H<SP>1</SP>NU, H<SP>11</SP>NU, NU which are mixed together in a reference frequency generator G 8 to produce a variable frequency output signal HNU-pNU+MU in which pNU and MU are variable terms. This output signal is mixed in mixer H 2 with the output F v from the oscillator to be controlled to produce an error signal which is divided down in divider Dd to result in a signal NU. This signal and the reference signal NU are then both multiplied by a constant C in harmonic generators G h1 , G 2 to produce signals which are compared to produce control signals for the oscillator. These control signals ##, C## are applied to variable capacitance diodes CV1, CV2 in the oscillator, Fig. 6 (not shown). In the error signal generator, Fig. 4, the two signals CNU are compared in a phase comparator circuit # 1 to provide a control signal C##. The signal NU from divider Dd and a further signal (C + 1) NU are fed to a mixer H 7 to produce a further signal CNU having a different phase from that derived from generator G h1 . This further signal is compared with the reference CNU signal in a frequency comparator # 2 to produce a further control signal ##. The comparature # 1 , # 2 , Fig. 5 (not shown), may be of the balanced diode type. In order to give a smooth change over between coarse and fine control an attenuation link At is provided between the coarse and fine control paths.
