Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1096194/C2/1> wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, R3 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, R4 represents a tertiary alkyl group and R2 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group provided that not more than one of R1 and R2 represents a hydrogen atom and processes for the preparation of phenols of the above formula in which R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, R2 represents an alkyl group, R3 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group and R4 represents a tertiary alkyl group which comprise alkylating an aminophenol of the formula <FORM:1096194/C2/2> in which R3 and R4 have the significance given above or the reductive alkylation of 4-nitroso or 4-nitro derivatives of phenols of the formula <FORM:1096194/C2/3> or of amino phenols of the formula <FORM:1096194/C2/4> with an aldehyde or ketone in the presence of hydrogen under pressure and a catalyst. The examples relate to the production of 2,6-di-tert.-butyl - 4 - N - isopropylaminophenol - 6 - tert.-butyl - 3 - methyl - 4 - isopropyl - aminophenol and 6 - tert. - butyl - 3 - methyl - 4 - sec - octylaminophenol. 2,6 - Di - tert. - butyl - 4 - nitrosophenol is prepared by treating 2,6-di-tert.-butyl phenol with sodium nitrite and hydrogen chloride in ethanol. 6 - Tert. - butyl - 3 - methyl - 4 - nitrosophenol is prepared in an analogous manner. The products of the invention are suitable for use as stabilizers for nylon, propylene and natural and synthetic rubbers.
