Abstract
1,095,364. Magnetic clutches. E. SCHAUMBURG. Sept. 2, 1965 [Sept. 2, 1964], No. 37457/65. Heading H2A. [Also in Division F2] The threaded stem 6 of a valve is formed integral with two three-armed spiders 15 between which are located three permanent magnets 17 adapted to cooperate with three similar magnets 24 carried externally of the valve housing 1 in pockets 23 of a casing 21. The magnets 24 are rotatable in the pockets and on rotation of the latter the magnets 17 are caused to roll around the inside of the casing thereby rotating the spindle and moving the valve closure member. The stem has an enlarged end 9 located with lost motion in a pilot valve 7 seated on a main closure member 5. A spider 11 carried by the pilot valve lifts the main valve once the pressure difference across the latter has been equalized. When only two pairs of magnets are used, those carried by the stem are arranged with a north pole of one in the same plane as the south pole of the other. In Fig. 3, the housing 31 has a coarse thread 35 and the pairs of magnets are spaced circumferentially and axially according to the pitch of this thread. Rotation of the casing 36 thus causes the stem 34 to move axially. The pole pieces 48 may be arranged to roll around the outside of casing 31 as in the above embodiment.
