A protection device for avoiding damage caused by the elimination due to thermal expansion, of the radial clearances between the rotor 1, Fig. 1, and the stator 2 of a bladed fluid-flow machine, such as a steam or gas turbine, includes one or more electrical contacts 3 installed in the stator at a smaller radial distance from the rotor than the stator to cause a device 5 in an electrical circuit to be energized when the rotor touches the contacts to operate a signalling device 7 or a governing device 8 for shutting down the machine. The electrical circuit is a relayless circuit such as a multi-vibrator circuit.
