Abstract

109,463. Rhodesian Enterprises Ltd., and Molesworth, H. B. Aug. 17, 1916. Reversing-gearing.-Frictional reversing-gearing is so arranged that the pressure of contact between the friction surfaces varies automatically with the energy transmitted in both directions of motion. Two driving friction wheels 13, Fig. 1, rotated in opposite directions by chains 15, are mounted on radial arms 8 connected by a bar 12 in such a way that either wheel can be swung into contact with the internal surface of a driven wheel 3 on a shaft 2, the drive between the wheels in engagement tending to increase the frictional contact. In a modification, applicable for driving two propeller shafts of a boat,' another shaft 2 and wheel 3 are placed on the opposite side of the driving-shaft 1, and are driven independently by similar friction wheels, which however are caused to rotate in opposite directions to the wheels 13 by intermediate gear-wheels. Fig. 6 shows an arrangement for reciprocating the table of a planing, filing, or like machine. The friction wheel 13 engages either of two bars 4<1>, 4" connected to the table, and is moved automatically from one to the other at the end of each traverse by inclined stop 29. In a modification, two friction wheels rotating in opposite directions are mounted on diverging radial arms 8 and engage a single bar 4<1>. Either wheel is thrown into engagement with the bar, automatically or otherwise, by a lever. This gearing may be designed to give a quick return movement of the table. An arrangement similar to that shown in Fig. 1 may be used to rotate the threaded operating-shaft of a planing-machine, the chain-wheels 10 being of different sizes to give a quick return movement. Fig. 13 shows a modification in which, a friction wheel 13, or two wheels 13, 14 of different sizes on the same axis, are swung around a driving-shaft 1 to engage either internal or external friction surfaces 4, 4' on a driven member 3. In this arrangement, the shaft 1 may be driven by the member 3.
