Abstract

1,094,530. Gripping apparatus. BASON & SONS Ltd. Oct. 3, 1966 [July 1, 1965], No. 27831/65. Headings B8A and B8H. In a brick handling apparatus, the bricks supplied on an endless conveyer belt 12 abut a stop (16) (Fig. 3, not shown) and thereby actuate a pneumatic pusher 21 to feed the bricks into a gripper device 24 for inversion and lateral separation before being released thereby. The gripper device is more fully described in Specification 1,086,810. On release by the gripper device 24 the bricks are each gripped between the horizontal portions of a pair of L- shaped tines 45 and withdrawn from the gripper means. The vertical portions of the tines 45 are pivoted about horizontal pivot pins 46 and their uppermost ends are urged apart by springs 47 and have an inflatable tube 48 mounted therebetween to provide on inflation the brick gripping force. The fingers 45 are mounted on a carriage 41 slidably mounted on guide-rails 42 and movable therealong by a pneumatic ram 37 between the gripper device and an intermittently movable endless conveyer belt 49. The conveyer passes over rollers 53, drive roller 50 and a tensioning roller 54 and is advanced one brick length at a time to enable the bricks to abut end-to-end. The pneumatic rams of the pusher 21, the gripper means 24 and the carriage 41 and the endless conveyers 12, 49 are operated in synchronization by means of appropriate circuitry (not shown). In an alternative embodiment (not shown) in which the bricks are advanced to the conveyer 49 without inversion, the gripper means 24 may be replaced by a suction-operated device forming the subject of Specification 1,052,641.
