Abstract
<PICT:1093932/C6-C7/1> In electro-chemically machining a metal or metallic workpiece, the machining tool is effectively moved towards the workpiece by causing relative movement between the tool and the workpiece in a series of discrete steps whilst an electric current is continuously passed between the tool and workpiece during the series of discrete step movements. As shown, a tool 3 is advanced towards a workpiece 1 by a stepping motor 5 which is driven in a series of discrete steps by a series of energizing pulses from a pulse generator 7, e.g. having an electronically stabilized frequency. A pulse counter 8 indicates the position of the tool, e.g. each pulse may give rise to a tool movement of 0.0001 inch. The rate and amount of tool advance may be controlled by means of a predetermined programme, e.g. set up on a punched card or tape or on magnetic tape.
