Abstract

1,093,371. Furniture joints. G.K.N. SCREWS AND FASTENERS Ltd. April 12, 1965 [Jan. 15, 1964], No. 1814/64. Heading A4H. [Also in Division F2] Members 11, 12 such as shelves are joined to an upright 10 by a tie bar 14 received in a through bore 13 in an upright 10 and in bores 15 in the members 11, 12, the tie bar 14 having portions 17 of the reduced cross-section which provide opposed shoulders 19, 20 having wedging surfaces complementary to corresponding surfaces on wedging elements 21. Each of the members 11, 12 has a second bore 16, of larger diameter than, and at right angles to the bore 15, the bore 16 being arranged to intersect the bore 15 so that the tie bar extends across the second bore. The two wedge elements 21 are received in the bores 16. The wedge elements 21 each comprise a disc-like head, a cylindrical bearing portion 23 and two limbs (24) spaced by a slot of rectangular cross-section spaced and dimensioned to straddle the portions 17 of the tie bar, the limbs and the shoulders 19, 20 on the tie bar having complementary wedging surfaces. In a modification Fig. 3 (not shown) two members with mitred faces are joined by a cranked tie bar. Modified forms of tie bars and wedge members are also described.
