Producers.-The gas - generating chamber of a watergas or carburetted water-gas producer consists of a lower chamber 1 and an upper thin-walled fuel-supply chamber 5 provided with a fuel inlet 6 and a valve-controlled gas-pipe 7. Between the chamber 5 and the producer walls is a steamgenerating chamber 26 packed with refractory material, communicating with a superheating-passage 31 in the lower part of the producer walls, and provided with bricks 32 which may be arranged chequerwise; the passage. 31 communicates with the lower part of chamber 1. During the gas-making period, water is fed from a nozzle 29 against a distributing-plate 30. The passage 31 and chamber 26 are heated, during the blowing period, by hot gases which escape through an outlet pipe 27 provided with a valve 28 Opposite the chamber 26 is an oil-cracking chamber 9 packed with refractory material and having a perforated floor 11 and a mixing-chamber 12, in communication with the upper part of the chamber 1; the chamber 9 is provided with an oil nozzle 16, distributing-plate 18, and outlet pipe 15, with valve 15<a>, for escape of hot gas during the blowing stage. Air is supplied, during the blowing stage, from a pipe 19 and through an inlet 3 and grate 2, part of the hot gas produced by combustion of the fuel passing through passage 31 and chamber 26; the rest of the hot gas passes through chamber 9, and its heating power may be increased before entering that chamber by admitting air, from pipe 19, through a branch pipe 20 and nozzle 14 into the mixing-chamber 12. Carburetted water-gas may be obtained by introducing after the blowing period, water from nozzle 29 and oil from nozzle 16, the resulting water gas and oil vapour commingling in the producer chamber and forming carbureted water-gas which passes away through the pipe 7. Heavy hydrocarbon may be injected at the same time through nozzles 25 into the producer chamber.
