Abstract
A graft polymer of a mixture of at least 2 monomers and a minor proportion of an elastomer is formed by continuously passing the mixture, in the form of a thin layer, between twodiathermic walls for 15 minutes to 3 hours at a constant reaction temperature of 130 DEG to 200 DEG C., the ratio between the heat-exchange area 5 of the walls and the thickness e of the layer per unit volume of the mixture being at least 0.125 cm.-2 in c.g.s. units, and collecting at the outlet of the diathermic walls a mixture containing a quantity of the interpolymer corresponding to a conversion ration of 40-80% of the monomers. In the examples, a styrene-butadiene rubber is grafted with (2) styrene and acrylonitrile, (4) styrene and methyl methacrylate, and (5) styrene, methyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid; a butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber is grafted with (1) styrene and acrylonitrile and polybutadiene is grafted with (5) styrene, and methyl methacrylate. Other rubbers specified are ethylenepropylene rubbers and other monomers are acrylic, maleic, fumaric and itaconic acids. The elastomer is dissolved or suspended in the monomers. In one embodiment the thin layer is formed by passing the reaction mixture through the annular space between two concentric cylinders, as in the apparatus of Fig.1 (not shown).
