Abstract

Curable and water-soluble aminoplasts contain at least one group of the formula -CH2OR where R is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl and at least one group of formula <FORM:1092793/C3/1> linked with amide nitrogen. R1 and R2 are each monovalent aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic residues which may be substituted with halogen or interrupted with oxygen atoms. R1 and R2 together may also represent a bivalent aliphatic residue. A is a bivalent aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic residue which may be halogen substituted or interrupted by oxygen atoms. Preferred examples are derived from pentamethylolmelamine or hexamethylolmelamine in which 4 or 5 of the methylol groups are replaced by the above phosphorus containing radicals. The aminoplasts may be prepared by first condensing an aminoplast former (e.g. melamine or urea) with HCHO, the resultant methylol compound may be partially or completely etherified by a C1 or C2 alcohol. The resultant aminoplast contains at least 2 and preferably 5 or 6 -CH2OR groups where R = H, Me or Et. It is further condensed with a phosphonamide. <FORM:1092793/C3/2> where R1, R2 and A have the meanings defined above. The aminoplast former, formaldehyde and the phosphonamide may also be reacted together in a single stage. In an example, pentamethylolmelamine or hexamethylolmelamine is reacted with 4 moles of 3-(dimethylphosphono) propionamide with heating. Reaction may be conducted in the presence of an acid catalyst, e.g. p-toluenesulphonic acid.ALSO:Organic fibrous materials especially those based on natural or regenerated cellulose are rendered flame-proof by treating with a water soluble curable phosphorus-containing aminoplast; the latter contains at least one group -CH2OR where R=H, Me or Et and at least one group of formula: <FORM:1092793/D1-D2/1> R1 and R2 are each monovalent aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic residues which may be halogen substituted or interrupted with oxygen atoms or R1 and R2 together may represent a bivalent aliphatic residue. A is a bivalent aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic residue which may be halogen substituted or interrupted by oxygen atoms. Preferred examples are derived from penta- or hexa-methylol melamine in which 4 or 5 of the methylol groups are replaced by the above phosphorus containing radicals. Impregnating solutions may also contain known aminoplasts and acid or latently acid curing accelerators. Condensation preferably takes place in the presence of water, i.e. by using superheated steam instead of hot air. Hydrogen peroxide may also be present as a condensation catalyst. From 10 to 50% by wt. of resin may be applied to the fibrous material. Treatment may also be carried out by a "two-bath process" the material being separately treated with the phosphorus containing aminoplast and another soluble aminoplast in either order of succession; it is advantageous to treat the material to a warm fixation before entering the second bath.
