Abstract

A ferrous surface is protected by a paste comprising an orthophosphoric acid and flakes (less than 100 microns) of a potassium mica, e.g. muscovite, biotite or phlogopite. The paste may also include ferric oxide, a synthetic resinous material, carbon black, potassium iodide, wetting agents and inhibitors. The paste may comprise (parts by weight) orthophosphoric acid 7.5 to 15, ferric oxide red 0 to 10, potassium mica 12 to 20, polyvinyl acetate 0 to 25, wetting agent 0 to 3, water - balance to 100.
