Abstract
Aliphatic dicarboxylic acids containing 6 or more carbon atoms are prepared by reacting a diolefin, or a mixture of diolefins, water and carbon monoxide at a temperature above 100 DEG C. and a pressure above 50 atm. in the presence of a cobalt carbonyl and a tertiary amine. Pyridine is the preferred amine. The cobalt carbonyl may be formed in situ from another cobalt derivative. It is preferred to operate in the presence of a solvent for diolefins and water, e.g. acetone, dioxan, to provide a homogeneous reaction mixture. In examples, adipic, a -methylglutaric and ethyl succinic acids, together with some by-product valeric acid, are obtained from butadiene, a C7 dicarboxylic acid from technical piperylene and C8 dicarboxylic acids, including suberic acid, from 1,5-hexadiene. The acids may be isolated from fractional distillation and/or crystallization.
