Abstract
Articles are moulded or extruded from an ethylene sulphide polymer having a melting-point of at least 200 DEG C. and a melt index of less than about 1.5 grams per minute at 215 DEG C. The ethylene sulphide polymers are prepared, as disclosed in Specification 1,073,083, by polymerizing the monomer, with or without minor amounts of other monomers, in the presence of a catalyst consisting of (1) R2M, where M is a Group IIb metal and R is alkyl or aryl, and (2) a compound selected from a group of compounds which contain a pair of unshared electrons. The preferred catalyst is the reaction product of zinc diethyl and water. The articles may be pipes, tubing, containers, film, strips and funicular structures such as filaments, threads and rods formed by conventional moulding procedures. The polymers may be mixed with stabilizers and other conventional additives prior to moulding. A wide variety of possible comonomers are mentioned, including 1,2-epoxy-3,4-epithiobutane. In the examples, ethylene sulphide homopolymers are prepared and moulded into articles.
