Individual bricks, blocks, or the like of, e.g. clay or limestone mortar, are made by pressing a single block in a suitable die removing the block from the die, forming grooves thereon, and finally fracturing the single block along the grooves to form a plurality of smaller roughfaced elements. The single block may be fired before it has been fractured, or the individual elements may be fired after the block has been fractured.
