Abstract

The invention comprises an electrode, e.g. an electrolysis electrode, comprising an electro-chemically active material and a support, the support including at least one flexible layer comprising discrete particles of impermeable carbon, the layer having a multitude of electrically conductive pathways from one surface to the other. In a particular embodiment the active material is loose pieces or swarf of metal and the support is a porous sheet of carbon-containing material, e.g. carbon cloth or a porous felt or paper of carbon, in the form of a bag or as an insert in a conventional porous bag or container in which the metal is compacted.ALSO:Thin carbon films may be produced by directly carbonizing and subsequently graphitizing a thin tissue paper. In a particular embodiment, Fig. 3, the paper 226 is placed on porous graphite support 227 and heated in an inert atmosphere and initially under pressure until it is fully carbonized and then graphitized <PICT:1092271/C1/1> at over 2100 DEG C. Gases and vapours are drawn off through the support and pipe 228. The support is heated by electric circuit 229. The paper used may be like blotting paper and may be made of wheat straw, esparto grass or eucalyptus grass, Vellum and cartridge paper may also be used.
