Abstract

A cyanine or merocyanine dye has at least one heterocyclic ring in which one heterocyclic N-atom involved in the colour-producing resonant system is substituted thus: <FORM:1091739/C4-C5/1> or <FORM:1091739/C4-C5/2> wherein M is H, alkali metal, ammonium, or an organic nitronium ion. Syntheses 1-6 exemplify the preparation of dyes by the condensation of the 3-substituted anhydro-2-methyl benzothiazolium hydroxide with ethyl-o-formate, -o-acetate and -o-propionate, 1-ethyl-2-ethylthio-6-methylquinoliu ethyl sulphate, 3-ethyl-5-acetanilide methylene rhodanine, and dimethylaminobenzoaldehyde; synthesis 7 by the condensation of the 3-substituted anhydro 1 - methyl - 2 - methyl - 5,6 - dichlorobenzoimidazolium hydroxide with ethyl o-formate; and synthesis 8 by the condensation of the 3-substituted anhydro - 2,5 - dimethyl benzoselenazole hydroxide with 2-methyl mercapto-3-ethylbenzothiazolium ethyl sulphonate. The reactions may be carried out in the presence of a condensing agent, e.g. triethyl amine or piperidine, in a solvent, e.g. pyridine, CH3COOH, (CH3CO)2O, alcohols or nitrobenzene. The reactions are carried out at 130-160 DEG C., for 1-2 hours and the product recrystallized from methanol or methanol/ethanol.
