Abstract

1,091,542. Railway vehicle transitional coupling. SOCIETE GENERALE ISOTHERMOS. Dec. 8, 1964 [Dec. 10, 1963; Aug. 12, 1964], No. 49967/64. Heading B7T. A transitional coupling comprises a hook 1 mounting a conventional screw and nut coupling linkage 5-9 shown in a stowed position on a hook 24, and a guide horned coupler block member 14 supported above its C.G. and adapted to engage within the mouth of an automatic coupling, the block member 14 being supported in an engaging position by a pivoted collapsible linkage 11, 12, 12<SP>1</SP> and a rod 19 having a pin 20 engaging in a slot 21 in a fixed member 22 and being held therein by a pivoted catch 23. When the block 14 is not in use it may be retracted and lowered, Fig. 3 (not shown) or folded upwardly to lie on top of the hook 1, Fig. 4 (not shown). In Fig. 5 (not shown) the hook 23 is replaced by a dovetailed portion to the slot 21 which may hold the pin 20 as did the catch. The block 14 may however be held in its coupling position by springs, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown), pushing against a hooked rod 27 supporting the link 5. In Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown) the links 5, 11 are replaced by double linkage 5, 5<SP>1</SP> and double links 36, 36<SP>1</SP> slot connected to the pin 4 so that they may bear on and submit traction forces directly to 5. The operation of the linkage may be carried out by lifting levers from the sides of the vehicle engaging side extending portions of the links 5, 11, or by handle or cranks fixed for example to the pin 4. In Fig. 15 the block is supported at variable height by linpage as shown, but in Fig. 16 (not shown) the rod 64 is sawtoothed to adjustably engage a pin 66. In Fig. 19 (not shown) variation in the height of the block is obtained by altering by means of a lever 79 he angular position of a pivoted member 72 supporting the rod 64. In other embodiments the link corresponding to 12 in Fig. 1 is screw adjustable in length, Figs. 23, 24 (not shown) and the link 55 is constructed to provide alternative pivot points for the end of the rod 64. Adjustment of the coupling length may also be obtained as in Figs. 25, 26 (not shown) by rotating the block 90 degrees to engage in one of two positions.
