In a washing machine having programme control means which causes successive operations to be performed in successive timed intervals, sub-interval control means are operative in at least on programme to provide intermittent agitation of the fabrics or the like being washed instead of the continuous agitation peculiar to that interval during another programme. The washing machine 10 has a control dial 11 mounted on a back panel 12 with the push buttons 13 for selecting water temperatures and the like and programme selector push buttons 14, 15. The washing operations may be started and also manually accelerated or modified by turning the dial with knob 16. When push button 14 is depressed to initiate the blanket and woollen cycle and knob 16 is rotated slightly the fill solenoid F is energized and the drive motor circuit is left open. Filling continues until pressure switch PS is operated when timer motor T is started and contacts 7B and ST are closed in series with sub-interval switch SS, unless these contacts have already been closed by turning knob 16. Switch SS comprises a cam 18 with a lobe 19 driven by timer motor T and operating a lever 20 to open and close contacts SS periodically. When contacts SS are closed, they energize a relay R which shifts a linkage SRL to actuate switch S2 and energize motor M to cause tumbling during this subinterval, e.g. 10 seconds, the intervals between tumbling being, e.g. 12 seconds. During the subinterval operations, the lobe 22 of a cam 21, driven by motor T operates a pawl 23 to advance ratchet 24 by one tooth for every revolution and 20 turning the cams operating switches 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. When the subinterval tumbling ceases the drive motor M is de-energized and the timer circuit is opened. The temperature control circuit is then closed to operate a water heater controlled by a temperature control unit TC to heat the wash water to the selected temperature. The timer is then re-energized and when contacts ST are closed another intermittent tumbling operation is performed after which there is a soaking operation without tumbling and then these two operations are repeated. Meanwhile although the contacts controlling the drain, rinse and spinning open and close, relay R being energized prevents these operations. The cycle is completed by removing the warm water, adding cold rinse water, soaking and extracting. The machine is drained and meanwhile subinterval tumbling takes place until the water level has dropped sufficiently to operate pressure switch PS when the machine goes into spin when switch SS closes. In the final main intervals spinning takes place. The machine also performs a normal wash cycle.
