Abstract

1,091,035. Biaxially oriented films; laminates. NATIONAL DISTILLERS & CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Feb. 11, 1966 [Feb. 24, 1965], No. 6201/66. Headings B5B and B5N. A biaxially oriented plastics film, e.g. of a polyolefine, is made by continuously extruding a flat film, subjecting the film to a first stretching operation in which it is separately stretched in the transverse and machine directions (TD and MD) to from 10-75% of the total required orientations in the TD and MD, and thereafter further stretching the film to the balance of the required orientation in the TD and MD. After the first stretching operation, the further stretching may be effected in stages of alternate TD/MD orientations. The TD and MD stretches may be performed in any order. The extruded film may be quenched (see Fig. 4, not shown) between the separate orientations in the first operation; the film may also be in the form of a laminate. Conventional apparatus may be arranged so as to effect the process (see Fig. 4). Specified plastics are polypropylene and a polypropylene / polyethylene / polypropylene laminate. Such a laminate may be made by extrusion through a die having a double outlet.
