1,090,774. Image tubes; photomultipliers. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 24, 1964 [Aug. 2, 1963], No. 30678/63. Heading H1D. In an image converter or intensifier or an image pick-up tube in which the photo-electrons impinge on the fluorescent screen or storage target, respectively, with sufficiently high velocity to release ions, the screen or target is provided with a conductive porous coating, e.g. of aluminium, gold or silver, to trap the ions released or the invention is stated to be applicable to photo-multiplier devices. A similar coating may be provided on other electrodes, e.g. the accelerating electrode in an image converter tube. A fluorescent screen may be provided with first an aluminium coating between 250 Š and 1000 Š thick evaporated in a high vacuum at a pressure of 2 x 10<SP>-5</SP> mm. Hg and then with the porous aluminium coating evaporated in argon at a pressure between 0À2 and 2 mm. Hg. Such latter coating is black and thus also inhibits light reflection. In an image intensifier several photo-cathode-luminescent screen stages are provided. In an image orthicon bombardment-induced-conductivity is utilized.
