Abstract

A composition having anaerobic curing properties comprises a monomer (or a partial polymer thereof) of the formula <FORM:1090753/C3/1> wherein R is -H, -CH3, -C2H5, -CH2OH or <FORM:1090753/C3/2> R1 is -H, -Cl, -CH3 or -C2H5; R11 is -H, -OH or <FORM:1090753/C3/3> x and y are integers, each equal to at least 1 and n is 0 or 1, an organic peroxide (other than a hydroperoxide) having a half-life (as defined) greater than 5 hours at 100 DEG C. and a tertiary amine. Monomers specified are diacrylates and dimethacrylates of diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, diglycerol and di-(pentamethylene) glycol, and the tetramethacrylate of diglycerol; esters of monoalkylene glycols may also be used and also glycol esters of acids such as ethacrylic or chloroacrylic acid. Suitable peroxides include 2,5 - dimethyl - 2,5 - di - (t - butyl peroxy)-hexane, di-t-butyl peroxide, dihexylene glycol proxide, t-butyl-cumyl peroxide, methyl isobutyl ketone peroxide, t-butyl peracetate and t-butyl perbenzoate. Tertiary amines specified are N,N - dimethyl - p - toluidine, N,N - dimethylaniline, tri-n-butylamine, triethylamine and 2-diethylamino-ethanol. Other components may be included in the compositions, e.g. plasticizer solvents for the peroxides such as dimethyl phthalate; thickening agents such as polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate, poly-n-butyl methacrylate, polyester resins; fillers such as silica, montmorillonite clay, bentonite; pigments and dyestuffs such as anthraquinone dyestuffs; traces of catalytic metals, such as Fe, Co, Mn; inhibitors such as hydroquinone. The compositions are suitable for bonding metal surfaces, particularly in systems such as nuts and bolts.
