Abstract

1,090,652. Ultrasonic liquid level indicator. ZAVODNY V.I. LENINA PLZEN, NARODNI PODNIK. April 2, 1965 [April 2, 1964], No. 14154/65. Heading H4D. In a liquid-level indicator, ultrasonic surface waves are generated on a rod dipping into the liquid and are converted at the point of contact of the rod with the liquid into longitudinal waves which travel through the liquid and are reflected back to the said point of contact by a submerged reflector supported by a float. In the embodiment shown, the reflector 4 has a cylindrical or spherical surface and is supported by a float 9 which is guided by the rod 1 and moves with the liquid surface to maintain the centre of curvature of reflector 4 at the point of contact of the rod 1 with the liquid surface. The travel time of the ultrasonic waves between the reflector 4 and an ultrasonic source 3 or reference mark 10 provides an indication of the liquid level and may be determined using an oscilloscope. The whole indicator may be arranged in a pipe dipped into the liquid, and a portion of the inner pipe surface may perform the function of the rod 1. The indicator may be used in radioactive environments.
