Abstract

Polyurethane foams are prepared by reacting a high molecular weight polyhydroxyl compound, an organic polyisocyanate, water or other blowing agents, in the presence of silicon-modified tertiary amine catalysts containing the group <FORM:1090589/C3/1> wherein R1 and R2 which may be the same or different represent alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl and/or aralkyl radicals or together are members of a cyclo or heterocycloaliphatic radical or, with R1 having the above meaning, the radical R2 represents an oxyalkylene or aminoalkylene radical which is linked via the oxygen or nitrogen atom to the Si atom in the form of a silicic acid ester or amide, and the Si atom is part of a low M.W. polysiloxane, or of a silicic acid ester or amide. Suitable catalysts are those having the formula <FORM:1090589/C3/2> wherein R3 is a C1- 4 alkyl radical, phenyl or vinyl and n is 0 to 4, mono-siloxy-N-heterocyclic compounds of the formula <FORM:1090589/C3/3> wherein m is 2, 3 or 4, compounds of the formula <FORM:1090589/C3/4> wherein the radical R3 is connected to the Si atom by an oxygen or nitrogen atom and 1,2,2,4-tetramethyl 2-sila-piperazine. The high M.W. polyhydroxyl compounds may be linear or branched polyethers, polyesters, polythioethers or polyacetals. Examples describe the use of a slightly branched polypropylene glycol prepared by reacting propylene oxide with trimethylol propane and a polyester derived from adipic acid, diethylene glycol and trimethylolpropane. The polyisocyanate may be aliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic, a mixture of toluene 2,4-and 2,6-diisocyanates being exemplified. Conventional catalysts may be mixed with the silicon-modified tertiary amine catalysts of the invention, stannous octoate being exemplified. Foam stabilizers such as water-soluble organopolysiloxane -polyalkylene glycol ethers and emulsifiers such as sulphonated castor oils may also be incorporated in the reaction mixture.
