Abstract
Trowel means for smoothing a layer of plastic lining material in an interior generally cylindrical surface comprises a plurality of longitudinally extending plate members 20 which combine to form a generally frustoconical trowel body having a small leading end and a resiliently expansible larger trailing end, the portions 21 of the plate members adjacent the small end being substantially flat and the remaining portions being arcuate in transverse cross section and of progressively increasing radius toward the large end with such arcuate portions in laterally overlapping relation to form said frusto-conical body, and a central mounting member 23 at the small end of said trowel body, the flat portions of plate members 20 being fixed against mounting surfaces on member 23 permitting flexure of the plate members 20 about transverse axes whereby the diameter of the large end of the trowel body may readily expand and contract by relative intersliding movement of said overlapping arcuate portions. Resilient means may be provided within the larger end of the trowel body to exert a perimeter-increasing force for resiliently urging the plate members radially outwardly to urge said larger end into yieldable troweling contact with the lining material or alternatively the plate members may have qualities of resilience and the free diameter of the larger end of the trowel body may be substantially greater than the troweling diameter such that when drawn through a cylindrical member the larger diameter portions of the plate members press yieldingly against the lining material surface to be troweled. The mounting member 23 is preferably polygonal in shape the number of flat outer surfaces corresponding to the number of plate members 20 employed and the flat portions of the plate members 20 being fixed against the flat surfaces of the polygonal mounting member. In use the trowel means is drawn along behind a lining machine 10 which applies lining material to the interior surface of pipe 11 by a rotary distributor head 13.
