Abstract
1,090,298. Electric control systems. P. CIBIE. March 25, 1965 [April 1, 1964; Oct.15, 1964], No.12688/65. Heading G1N. A control system for regulating the inclination of the headlamps of a vehicle in response to variations in the loading of the vehicle comprises, in respect of each headlamp 1, a spiral bi-metal strip 2 fixed at one end 3 and secured at the other end 4 to a rotatable abutment 5 adapted to cooperate with the helical cam track 11 of an axially spring-loaded cam 9. The cam is secured on one end 6b of the core of an electromagnet 6, and the other end 6a of the core abuts an adjusting screw 7 carried by the headlamp, which is pivoted under gravity about a horizontal axis 8. The heating current for the bi-metal strips 2 is controlled by a thermal switch 25 of the type described in Specification 921, 847. When the vehicle is loaded a push-button switch 17 is closed to energize each electromagnet 6 and cause the core to move to the right thereby moving the cam 9 clear of the abutment 5 against the action of a spring 10 and closing a pair of contacts 15, 20 to establish a holding circuit. At the same time current begins to flow through the bi-metal strips 2 and the thermal switch 25 which are connected in series. The switch 25 opens after a time interval determined by the position of a finger 34 carried by an arm 32 which is mounted on the axle 31 and is responsive to the state of loading of the vehicle. After it has first opened the switch 25 will oscillate between open and closed positions, so that the bi-metal strips will soon attain a mean temperature dependent on the state of loading of the vehicle, and the abutments 5 will be rotated accordingly. The relay 13 of a timer 12 opens a switch 14 in the circuit of the electromagnets 6 a predetermined time after the push-button switch 17 is closed, whereupon the springs 10 move the cams 9 towards the left until they meet the abutments 5. The amount of this movement, which controls the angle through which the headlamps 1 are tilted, is determined by the angular position of the abutments. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the cams (9) are secured on rods (41) which are connected by a cross-member (42) to a shaft (43) fitted with a hand grip (44). When the hand grip is pulled to retract the cams against the force of the springs (10), a contact (45) carried by the shaft (43) closes the circuit of the timer (12) and the bi-metal strips (2) in series with the thermal switch (25) and also energizes an electromagnet (49) which actuates a lock (48) to hold the shaft (43) in the retracted position. When the timer opens the circuit the lock releases the shaft and the cams move back to engage the abutments as in the previous embodiment.
