Abstract

1,090,078. Pumps operating by electromagnetic interaction with fluids. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 1, 1964 [Dec. 3, 1963], No. 47687/63. Heading H2A. An electromagnetic interaction pump comprises two concentric cylindrical walls 2, 3 together defining an annular duct 1 for the pumped conductive fluid and a concentric magnetic structure 6 which carries a polyphase winding in slots 7 which are skew to the longitudinal pumping direction. The magnetic structure 6 produces a helically rotating magnetic field and thus induces helical motion of the fluid in the duct so that it travels from inlet 4 to outlet 5. A magnetic return path 9 is provided on the opposite side of the duct and conductive end rings 10, 11 may be provided adjacent the return path. In a modification structure 6 may be outside the duct and the return path inside and the latter may also carry windings in skewed slots. The pumping rate may be altered by axially moving, either two magnetic structures each with the slots skewed at different angles or an elongated structure with the slot angle changing along its length, to co-operate with the duct. A further modification where the angle of skew of the slots can be varied is also disclosed. The duct walls may be of metal or ceramic.
