Abstract

A dense fine matte surface receptive to pencil and ink drawing and also suitable as a base for photographic emulsions is formed on a plastics or other sheet material by suspending finely divided inorganic pigment in an aqueous polyacrylic resin medium, applying the medium as a coating to the sheet material, drying, and heating the dried coating at a suitable temperature to accomplish thermosetting of the resin. A sheet of plastics or other material is coated with a well adhering matte surfaced layer having good pencil receptive properties comprising a finely divided inorganic pigment, affording a good pencil tooth but smooth enough to receive a light-sensitive composition, and a thermosetting polyacrylic resin binder, the binder being hardened by heating to a temperature of 200 to 400 DEG F for 1 to 20 minutes. The hardening may be effected at between 270 and 340 DEG F for 2 to 10 minutes to produce a hard pencil receptive surface which is highly resistant to wear by extensive erasure and resistant to gouging by a hard sharp pencil. 0.1 to 5% by weight of zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, based on the pigment, may be included to improve opacity and whiteness. The coating may be applied, e.g. by roller or blade, to the sheet material as a suspension of the finely divided pigment in an aqueous thermosetting acrylic resin binder medium, e.g. an aqueous solution or emulsion, the coating then being dried and hardened by heating. The pigment may be ground glass, oxides of aluminium or other metals, silicates, stearates, silica, diatomaceous earth, or starch. The sheet material may be a film of polyethylene terephthalate or polycarbonate, or cotton or glass fabrics filled with polyester resins, lacquered or starched-filled cloth, paper, or cellulose acetate film. The coating composition may be used to replace or touch-up damaged areas of the coating. Light sensitive elements may be produced by further coating the coated sheet material with a composition containing combinations of diazonium compounds and coupling components, e.g. a composition containing cellulose acetate, 2-methoxyethanol, gamma butyro lactone, sulphosalicylic acid, 2, 2\sv, 4, 4\sv-tetra hydroxybiphenyl, p-diethylaminobenzene diazonium chlorozincate, thiourea, 2\sv, 3-dihydroxy-2-naphthanilide, and silica gel. The further coating is dried, exposed through a positive line original and developed in an ammonia chamber. The resulting print is blue black with a matte surface which accepts pencil.
