Abstract

1,089,872. Evaporators, film-type. HEAD, WRIGHTSON & CO. Ltd. May 4, 1965 [Feb. 4, 1964], No. 4727/64. Heading BIB. In an evaporator suitable for viscous liquids, wherein some of the liquid vaporizes as it flows as a film down the inner surface of a vertical, externally-heated tube 40', part of the film is guided by scraper blades 44' from the surface of the tube onto the plates 42 of a rotor assembly 41 within the tube, and is then transferred back to the inner surface of the tube. The blades 44' are attached to backing plates 47 (Fig. 9) carried on the ends of swing- ing arms 48 pivotally mounted at 48 to the top and bottom plates of the assembly 41. The rotation of the assembly 41 causes the liquid to build up on plates 42, and slide back to the inner wall of the tube off brackets 43. Apparatus is also described wherein the film of liquid is transferred onto one or more cylindrical rolls instead of the polygonal assembly 41. These rolls may be hollow and heated or cooled. An embodiment is described in which the externally-heated tube is disposed horizontally.
