Abstract
Sheets and formed bodies of low inflammability are produced from comminuted organic fibrous materials (wood chips, shredded wood, flax shives, sisal fibres, or bagasse) by impregnating with an aqueous solution of a fire-retarding chemical and an aldehyde, mixing with a thermosetting binding agent, and then subjecting to heat and pressure. The impregnation is carried out at a temperature of 50-70 DEG C. with mono- or di-ammonium phosphate to which a nitrogenous compound having at least one reactive hydrogen atom, e.g. urea, dimethylol-urea, or triaminotriacin, or other fire-retarding chemical, e.g. dicyandiamide or pentaerythritol, is added. The aldehyde is one containing a number of reactive atoms or groups, e.g. paraformaldehyde, trichloroacetaldehyde, or hexamethylene tetramine. The impregnated material is dried at a temperature of 130-160 DEG C. and is then air-conditioned at 20 DEG C. and 60% humidity to ensure a uniform moisture content of about 2%. The resin is a urea- or melamine-formaldehyde resin and is used in an amount of 18-20% of resin solids based on the dry weight of the fibrous material.
