Abstract
Methylchlorosilanes and methylhydrochlorosilanes, especially CH3SiHCl2, (CH3)2SiHCl, (CH3)2SiCl2, and CH3SiCl3, are prepared by reacting MeCl with hydrogen in the presence of Si, Cu and metals, or salts of metals, of Group VIII, at temperatures between 300 DEG and 400 DEG C. The contact mass may be prepared by adding aqueous salts of Group VIII metals to a silicon-copper alloy or to a mixture of silicon and copper powders, or the dried salts may be mechanically mixed with Si/Cu. ZnCl2 is a further preferred additive. The metal salts are preferably the chlorides, nitrates, oxalates or formates of Fe, Co and Ni in amounts between 0.3 and 10% by weight of the mass. In the case of the chlorides and nitrates, the mass is first treated with H2 at 360-400 DEG C. before being used in the synthesis. An alternative preparation of the contact mass involves precipitating oxides of copper and the Group VIII metal, mixing the oxides with silicon powder and reducing the oxides with H2 at 340-360 DEG C. The contact mass can be continually re-used with periodic introduction of fresh mass.
