Abstract
1,089,172. Soldering. DAVID GRIFFIN Ltd. Jan. 19, 1966 [Feb. 2, 1965], No. 4488/65. Heading B3R. In a soldering iron having an orifice in or adjacent the soldering bit, a reservoir for solder and flux is disposed near the heatable part of the iron with an inlet communicating with the orifice and an outlet to a suction line and a filter arranged between the reservoir and suction line, the filter comprising a filter element having a large cross-sectional area relative to the suction line and held in an air-tight manner round its edges to prevent by-passing of the element. In an embodiment an iron has an electric element 1, Fig. 1, in a body portion 2 and a bit 4 screwed obliquely into the front of the body portion, the bit having a bore 6 communicating via a hollow screw 8 with a reservoir 5. A filter 9 comprising an annular element 10 of glass or silicon fibre in a cylindrical container 12 having a closed bottom and a cover 13 at its top is arranged about the screw 8 which secures it to the body. The reservoir is screwed to the exterior of the container 12. Annular grooves with holes drilled therein are provided in the top and bottom of the container and communicating with the upper groove is a passageway 21 connected to the suction air line. In a modification the passageway 7 opens directly into the reservoir and a disc-like filter element is provided at the outlet from the reservoir. In another modification the filter is disposed part-way along the passageway, being provided with its housing above the body with the reservoir below. In a final modification the reservoir is mounted separately from the body being in direct contact with the bit 4, Fig. 5. The filter is provided in the side wall of the reservoir.
