Abstract

1,089,129. Multi-spindle automatic lathe- WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK GILDEMEISTER & COMP. A.G. Dec. 13, 1965 [Dec. 14, 1964], No. 52845/65. Addition to 1,025,506. Heading B3T. [Also in Division F2] The hollow work spindle 7 of a multi-spindle automatic lathe are indexable around a central drive-shaft 3 from which they may be driven at a common basic speed but from which they may be uncoupled in one or more spindle positions to be driven at different speeds by independent drive and gear units which lie outside the indexing circle of the spindles 7 and which are thus clear of the workpieces 45. Normal drive at basic speed is from a central gear 4 mounted on the shaft 3, through a spindle gear 5 and a plate clutch 37 to the spindle 7 when the spindle 7 is indexed to the selected position for independent drive, clutch 37 is disengaged and a shaft 54 carrying two shift gears 52, 53 is displaced under the action of an hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder 44a initially to engage shift gear 53 with spindle gear 5 to transmit synchronizing rotation through clutch 48 and gear 47 to the shift gear 52. Clutch 46 is disengaged at this juncture. Continued displacement of shaft 54 brings shift gear 52 into synchronized engagement with gear 16a fixedly mounted on the spindle 7, this movement being followed by disengagement of clutch 48 and engagement of clutch 46. Driving connection is thus completed from independent motor 8 through change gears 9, 10, shaft 11a, and gears 47, 52, 16a to the spindle 7. To facilitate insertion of shift gear 53 into mesh with spindle gear 5 it is resiliently mounted by means of a spring 57 and is provided, as is also shift gear 52, with teeth having pointed end faces. Cylinder 44a may be replaced by a resiliently mounted cam.
