To maintain the amplitude of the reference burst substantially constant in a colour television transmitter the input video signal containing the reference burst applied at 10, Fig. 1, is combined in phase opposition 15, 14 with a burst of standard oscillation of the same frequency as the reference burst and constant amplitude applied at 13, thereby deriving an error signal when the reference burst departs from the value of the standard oscillation which is fed through a threshold device 17 arranged to pass only error signals exceeding a predetermined amplitude and added 11 to the input signal. The picture or vision signals are removed from the error signal, as shown, or from the input video signal before it is applied to the phase reverser 15, Fig. 2, not shown.
