Abstract
1,088,836. Smoke detectors. ETABLISSEMENT POUR APPLICATIONS ELECTRONIQUES. Nov. 5, 1964 [Nov. 6, 1963], No. 45158/64. Heading G1N. A detector of gases, vapour or smoke comprises an ionization chamber containing a radioactive source forming one limb of a potential dividing network which is adjustable to vary the sensitivity of the device and also a capacitor variable to adjust the time constant. The radioactive source and the collector electrodes may be separately adjustable in the ionization chamber Fig. 3 (not shown) which may contain accelerating electrodes between the two. The potential dividing network is connected to the starter electrode of a cold cathode tube and provided, as shown, with an H. T. supply adjustable to vary the firing point of the system. The variable capacitor is connected between the starter electrode and the cathode. The striking of the tube may operate a relay. Two such systems may be arranged with their ionization chambers disposed to collect and respond to lighter-than-air and heavier-than-air components respectively, the two cold cathode tubes being connected to a relay in a common cathode circuit Fig. 5 (not shown). Alternatively the ionization chamber circuits can be connected to a single tube with separate starters Fig. 6 (not shown). As another alternative the common cathode circuit of two tubes may contain a resistance and the voltage developed across it may fire another cold cathode tube Fig. 7 (not shown). A number of such systems in different locations may be connected as a counter chain so that the number of impulses transmitted is a measure of which detector has fired. The potential dividing network which provides the starter potential may contain thermistors so that the system is sensitive to temperature changes also Fig. 8 (not shown). Alternatively the thermistors may form a separate network, the output from which is amplified by a transistor before application to the starter Fig. 9 (not shown). The temperature sensitive and ionization chamber networks may be connected to separate cold cathode tubes Fig.10 (not shown) but these in turn, may be coupled to a common tube Fig.11 (not shown). The common tube may be made to respond also to the amplified output from a photo-cell so that the system is light-sensitive also.
