Abstract

1,088,824. Geophysical surveying by electrical determination. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N. V. April 20, 1965 [April 22, 1964], No. 16605/65. Heading G1N. In a method of determining the dielectric properties of oil bearing rock formations where oil and water are present together, two conductors are arranged one above the other in a bore hole and may be in the form of a di-pole aerial. The conductors are connected to an oscillator Fig. 1 (not shown) having an output frequency in the range 150 Mc/s to 1500 Mc/s. The frequency at which the circuit operates and the change in frequency on displacement of the conductors in the hole, may be measured by comparison with a fixed frequency with the aid of a heterodyne circuit. The changes in signal amplitude at the generated frequency may also be measured and values of dielectric properties #', #" determined from the measurements. The complex dielectric constant includes the dielectric constant proper #' and a dielectric losses component e", i.e. a component #' which is 90‹ out of phase with the voltage applied and component #" in phase therewith. It is stated that by using frequencies in the above range, the magnitude #' is independent of salinity and is dependent only on the porosity, the degree of water saturation and the type of rock formation, and the value of e" is dependent on salinity which can be determined from measurement of #". The degree of water saturation can be determined from measurement of #', if the porosity and type of rock is known e. g. from well cuttings.
