Abstract
1,088,592. Conjugate filaments. LANSIL Ltd. July 22, 1964 [Aug. 22, 1963], No. 33283/63. Heading B5B. Bicomponent synthetic textile filaments are made by feeding to a spinneret two or more different concentric non-turbulently flowing streams of polymer solutions or melts, and extruding the streams in such a manner that adjacent streams are extruded together through holes in the spinneret, thereby producing bicomponent filaments derived from different streams. The holes of the spinneret are expediently disposed in one or more circular rows, the number of rows being (n - 1), where n is the number of flows of solution or melt passing into the spinneret. The arrangement of holes may also be non-circular, e.g. elliptical. The flow of at least one polymer solution or melt may be perpendicular to at least one other polymer solution or melt until the flows are combined. In one embodiment (Fig. 1) a non-turbulent flow of one polymer solution or melt is introduced at B by conduit 2 into a non-turbulent flow of a second polymer solution or melt introduced at A through conduit 1. The combined flow, comprising annular flow 3 surrounding core flow 4 passes through a spinneret having holders 5, 6 and a single circle of holes 7. The composite filament 8 is of side-by-side type. In a further embodiment (Fig. 4) solution or melt A is fed into inlet 11, solution or melt B is fed through inlet 13 into chamber 14 and the two streams, joined concentrically, are fed into chamber 17 through inlet 15. An additional layer of A, fed through inlet 16, forms an outer concentric ring of fluid about the two-ring stream emerging from 15. The multiple component solution passes from pipe 18 to a spinneret 19 having two circles of holes (Fig. 7). The components of the filaments may be of the same polymer but differently coloured, or of the same or different polymers having different chemical and/or physical characteristics. Examples describe the extrusion of two-component and three-component flow systems comprising plain and pigmented cellulose acetate solutions, and plain and pigmented acrylic polymer solutions.
