Screw sockets.-Relates to stoppers or devices for closing orifices and of the kind in which a resilient body is caused to expand or contract within the orifice by a screwed rod and means travelling thereon, and comprises a solid resilient body within which is embedded means for expanding and contracting the body. Two plates 3, 4, Fig. 3, are enclosed within the rubber or like stopper 1, the plate 3 being swivelled upon the end of a shank 5 and the plate 4 threaded upon it so that the plate 4 can be moved up or down and the stopper expanded or contracted by turning the shank by means of its head 8. Preferably, the plates 3, 4 are bent or dished away from each other. The shank may be formed with an angular end 10, Fig. 4, terminating either below or above the top of the stopper and adapted to be engaged by a key 11, Fig. 8, provided with a socket 12 and having a hook end 13 to engage a transverse hole 14 in the end of the shank. As shown in Fig. 5, the body 1 consists of a textile filling 2, surrounded by a rubber exterior, and the head 6 of the shank is enlarged and the lower plate dispensed with, the plate being flat with a rounded lower edge. In another modification, the enlarged head 6 is bevelled inwards towards the shank 5. The device may be used for securing or anchoring purposes, and, when the elastic body of the closure is composed of rubber, for affording insulation for electric wires &c.
