Abstract
A method of obtaining organic compounds from fish water or other aqueous solution containing proteins and carbohydrates comprises the steps of adding to the water (a) an alkaline compound selected from the hydroxides, carbonates, sulphites, silicates, borates, acetates and nitrites of sodium, potassium and ammonium, and the oxides, carbonates and silicates of calcium and magnesium and (b) a soluble ferric or aluminium salt, the alkaline compound being added at least in an amount which is chemically equivalent to an amount of sodium hydroxide which if added to the water alone would raise the pH thereof above 8.0 and the souble salt being added in an amount sufficient both to neutralize the alkaline compound and to produce a precipitate in the water by (i) creating a final pH of 5.0 to 7.0 by the addition of the alkaline compound followed by the addition of only the aluminium salt, (ii) creating a final pH of from 3.0 to 4.5 by the addition of the alkaline compound followed by the addition of the ferric salt alone or with the aluminium salt, or (iii) creating a final pH of from 3.0 to 4.0 by the addition of ferric salt alone or with the aluminium salt followed by the addition of the alkaline compound. The ferric and aluminium salts may be the chlorides, sulphates or nitrates. The dried precipitate may be used as animal feeding-stuff.ALSO:A method of obtaining organic compounds from fish water or other aqueous solution containing proteins and carbohydrates comprises the steps of adding to the water (a) an alkaline compound selected from the hydroxides, carbonates, sulphites, silicates, borates, acetates and nitrites of sodium, potassium and ammonium, and the oxides, carbonates and silicates of calcium and magnesium and (b) a soluble ferric or aluminium salt, the alkaline compound being added at least in an amount which is chemically equivalent to an amount of sodium hydroxide which if added to the water alone would raise the pH thereof above 8.0 and the soluble salt being added in an amount sufficient both to neutralize the alkaline compound and to produce a precipitate in the water by (i) creating a final pH of 5.0 to 7.0 by the addition of the alkaline compound followed by the addition of only the aluminium salt, (ii) creating a final pH of from 3.0 to 4.5 by the addition of the alkaline compound followed by the addition of the ferric salt alone or with the aluminium salt, or (iii) creating a final pH of from 3.0 to 4.0 by the addition of ferric salt alone or with the aluminium salt followed by the addition of the alkaline compound.
